The Attic Update Vol. 1 - The dagger from the sky, auction records shattered, and an electric masterpiece on wheels
Beyond Alternative Assets
Thanks for signing up for the Attic Update, a weekly look at the exciting world of collecting, investing, and alternative assets.
My goal is to provide the most important stories and ideas to ponder so you can decide where to focus and dig deeper.
The Attic Update is broken down into three sections. Past, Present, and Future. Each week, I will deliver:
PAST - Interesting ideas about the history of collecting, investing, and markets.
PRESENT - Ten of the most relevant stories over the last week in collecting and investing in alternative assets.
FUTURE - Where are we headed? We will look at what’s next for alternative assets and the people working hard to make visions into reality.
Let’s begin!
PAST
The Dagger From the Sky -
One hundred years ago, King Tut’s tomb was excavated by archaeologist Howard Carter and his team. Thousands of treasures were packed in the tomb, many made from solid gold. But one artifact attracted intense curiosity.
Three years after discovering the tomb, Carter found an iron dagger wrapped in the material around the right thigh of Tut’s mummified body.
An iron blade was extremely rare during the first millennium B.C. Through new technology called x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, scientists discovered the iron dagger to be from a meteorite. The composition is identical to the meteor called Kharga, found in the city of Marsa Matruh.
Thousands of years before they learned to smelt iron ore, the study of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic language finds references of harvesting metal from fallen meteorites. They pronounced it “ba-en-pet” or “iron from the sky.”
PRESENT
