#58-Driven to Create
"To drive such a car is to glimpse the qualities of the production models of the distant future." -Gordon Wilkins
Hope you are having a great week!
I’m searching for the world's greatest collectibles, and exploring the journey of history's greatest creators.
Here’s a few things I’ve learned over the last few days -
#1 - The 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SLR ‘Uhlenhaut Coupe’
“With practice, the enormous power of the 300 SLR proves to be fully usable. On highways, 100 to 120 mph becomes cruising speed, and on ordinary roads the average speeds beat anything one had thought possible, without ever taking risks. To drive such a car is to glimpse the qualities of the production models of the distant future. It points the way to vast improvements in controllability and safe handling that will make existing conceptions obsolete.”
-Auto journalist Gordon Wilkins, after his first test drive in the Mercedes Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, 1956

#2 - Creating the Legend of Ty Cobb
"But suppose you were too ambitious for that kind of horseplay? Suppose you kept your eye on the ball, studied, practiced, learned to make the most of what nature had given you. You could go to towns that would make Augusta look like a crossroads. You could be famous, you could make a fortune. And every boy in America would idolize you. Your name would go down in the history books." "That night was the turning point," Cobb said. "I made up my mind to be a big leaguer if it killed me.”
From the awesome book, 'Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty,' by author Charles Leerhsen

#3 - The Most Valuable Gold Coin of All-Time?
“In the late 1700s, silversmiths and goldsmiths were particularly respected members of the community, often acting as bankers, assayers and authenticators of the babble of gold and silver coins of the world, which circulated in the bullion starved colonies of the new Republic.”

My goal is to keep the creators story alive, share the most important concepts and lessons, and inspire the next generation of great creators…
